Hot Ice is on fire

Blackpool’s glitziest show is back, with all that you’d expect from the Hot Ice team.

From the get go, audiences are captivated by dazzling stunts, tricks, flips and spins from the international cast.

The Gazette - Hot Ice 2015 Review

And that's without even considering the thousands of feathers, sequins and rhinestones, that gleam reflecting the bright white ice.

With nearly 80 years of show skating heritage to live up to, the Pleasure Beach-based team once more delights.

Stunning routines see the 25-strong cast flow non-stop from formations into solo and duo pieces, where spectacular speciality moves leave you gasping at their dare-devil
antics.

Cranking up the pre-show atmosphere, the clattering of skates plays in the background at The Arena, before American skater Michael Chau opens the show, drawing out the rest of the cast from tunnels and stairways around the theatre.

Among the new highlights for the 2015 Desire show, once more produced and directed by Pleasure Beach managing director Amanda Thompson, is a beautiful version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue, arranged specially for the show.

In a change from skintight body suits, the women appear to float out of the ice in cool turquoise chiffon dresses, hitting the syncopations in the music throughout the choreography, by Oula Jaaskelainen and Lynsey Brown.

Hot Ice: the sensational skaters of Blackpool's Pleasure Beach

This astonishing institution is an exhilarating combination of art and sport, beauty and speed, balletic skill and kitsch

Between engagements at the Manchester international festival, I nipped over to Blackpool – insofar as anyone can nip on one of those sluggish local trains – to see Hot Ice at the Pleasure Beach Arena. It was my first ever visit to Blackpool. It was also the first time I had seen an ice show since childhood holidays in Brighton. I have to say I found it an exhilarating mix of dance, spectacle and acrobatics.

Combining moments of dazzling beauty with sheer speed, it was also a reminder that skating is a rare combination of art and sport. I gathered that shows under the generic title of Hot Ice began in Blackpool in 1936. But each show has a specific title, and this year it was Desire. (Since previous titles have included Passion, Allure and Entice, you get the general idea.)

Hot Ice Show: Desire is at the Pleasure Beach Arena, Blackpool, until 5 September.

Skate It with Katie Stainsby

The Arena will be presenting Skate It with Dancing on Ice star Katie Stainsby on Wednesday 29th Oct from 1pm to 3pm. The cost for this is £15 per person and is open to adults and children aged 3 and over.

£15.00 per person charge includes skate hire

Parents/guardians accompanying children are allowed to spectate for free.

Any ability of skater is welcome to sign up for this skating workshop which will involve Katie Stainsby taking attendees through a 2 hour workshop including group skating, solo skating, learning a choreographed routine to music and concluding with a question and answer session with Katie.

Advance booking is recommended as places are limited.
